Marine Day

Marine Day is a national holiday celebrated on the third Monday of July. Called Umi no Hi in Japanese, this day is also known in English as “Sea Day” or “Ocean Day”.

The Japanese usually use this holiday to take a trip to the beach. Japan being an island, people also feel grateful to the ocean and all the good things it brings to Japan and its people.

Prefectures that are not connected to the sea, also called Inland Prefectures, also have the same holiday as Marine Day, but call them differently. For example, the Nara prefecture calls it “Mountain Day of the Nara Prefecture”. Other prefectures renamed this day as River Day.
