Mountain Day, or Yama no Hi, is a new holiday in Japan, and it takes place on August 11.
This day exists only since 2016, and has been created in order to provide the opportunity to get people to appreciate and admire the mountains of Japan. A very appropriate holiday, since mountains cover 73 percent of Japan’s land mass.
Because Mountain Day is a new holiday, there are no festivals or customary foods associated with it. However, since most of Japan is just mountains, it is possible that activities such as hiking, skiing, or even mountaineering becomes associated with this holiday in the future.
